EatWell DC LLC Management Biography

David Winer, Principal

David Winer was born and raised in Newton, Massachusetts and has lived in Washington, DC for the past 14 years. He owns a home in Logan Circle.

Winer has spent 26 years in professional restaurant management, beginning in 1984 at the acclaimed Division Sixteen in Boston, MA. After eight years, six as GM, he moved to South Florida and opened his first restaurant along with the Division Sixteen partners. WPA, a casual American eatery, opened to huge crowds in 1991. In 1993, he and his partners opened Grillfish Miami Beach which was shortly followed by Grillfish Boston. After selling WPA 1995, he moved to Washington, DC and opened the third Grillfish in 1996. Grillfish Coral Gables, FL and Bethesda, MD opened shortly thereafter followed by Grillsteak in South Beach.

In 2002, after 18 years together, Winer and his partners separated amicably. Grillfish Coral Gables and Bethesda were sold; Grillsteak folded into Grillfish Miami Beach. Winer retained principal ownership of Grillfish DC.

In 2003 Winer and his new partners, Antonio Oquendo and Josh Hahn, formed EatWell DC Management and opened Logan Tavern, in the Logan Circle neighborhood of DC, a casual neighborhood eatery that was an immediate success. The partners followed with Merkado Kitchen, a Latin-Asian fusion concept, in 2005, also located in Logan Circle. In 2007 they opened The Heights, another casual American, in the newly emerging Columbia Heights neighborhood.

In 2008, Logan tavern was expanded with an additional 1200 square feet added to the original 2500.

In 2009 Merkado Kitchen was transformed into Commissary, a very casual neighborhood eatery serving breakfast, lunch and dinner which has since become one of the busiest spots in Logan Circle.

The partners are now in process of buying a small farm for growing organic produce. The intention is to provide fresh vegetables to all four restaurants in the EatWell DC group for the bulk of the growing season.
